Letter of Support for UC Student-Workers Union UAW 2865 Strike
The faculty principal investigators of the 2022-23 Mellon Sawyer Seminar “Unarchiving Blackness” stand in solidarity with the UC Academic Workers Union (UAW 2865, UAW 5810, and SRC-UAW) Strike. We affirm their legal right to strike, across the University of California system. Graduate students and postdoctoral fellows have been a vital part of our events and conversations, and their questions and contributions have helped push our thinking in ways large and small. We are deeply grateful for the energy they have brought to these encounters, which have enriched us all.
Because of this, we have postponed our remaining in-person and Zoom events scheduled for Fall 2022.
Graduate students and postdoctoral fellows are a core part of our audience, and it would be unfair to make them choose between striking for fair working conditions and attending scheduled events.
Everyone — including our 48,000 striking students, postdoctoral fellows and academic researchers — deserves a living wage. We look forward to a fair and equitable resolution as soon as possible, after which we will resume programmed activities.
