About
The Graduate Fellowships in Engaged Learning support CHASS graduate students who want to build hands-on, research-based learning into their teaching. Studios. Field projects. Community partnerships. Translation workshops. Students working with archival collections, oral histories, datasets, performances, neighborhoods. The aim is to create research opportunities for undergraduates at any stage of their studies, and to give graduate students the time and means to design that kind of course before they are asked to teach one.
Each fellow comes with a course or a set of assignments in mind that they would like to build around undergraduate research and engaged learning. As a group, the cohort will explore the theory and pedagogy of undergraduate engagement, but will also create working models. Fellows meet one to two times per quarter over a provided meal to workshop those courses and assignments in progress, and at the end of the year each fellow presents their working ideas to the group. Alongside the pedagogical questions, the cohort will take up the practical obstacles that usually stall this kind of teaching: getting a course listed and approved, student recruitment, funding, assessment, and how to make this work legible on a CV that departments read for research first.
Graduate fellows receive $1,000, which may be used for professional development, enhancement materials, or student support. Graduate students at all stages are welcome; no prior experience with undergraduate research is required, only an interest in trying it.
