The UCR Departments of History and Religious Studies; The Institute for Research on World Systems; The Center for Ideas and Society Present “Religious War and Religious Peace in Early Modern Europe” with Professor Wayne TeBrake, Professor Emeritus, SUNY Purchase.

Prof. TeBrake will discuss his new study (Cambridge, 2017), which analyzes six clusters of increasingly destructive religious war from 1529 to 1651, and the diverse settlements that brought these wars to an end. Combining historical analysis with theories of political contention, his book describes the complex religious peace that emerged from two centuries of experimentation in accommodating religious differences, and provides a novel account of the origins of religious pluralism in Europe. The book draws on both documentary sources and photographic evidence to show how many Europeans replaced the imagined unity and purity of late medieval Christendom with a durable pattern of religious diversity deeply embedded in political, legal, and cultural institutions.
