Welcome to the Center for Ideas and Society. Our mission is to support collaborative and interdisciplinary research, pedagogy, and creativity at U.C. Riverside as well as locally, nationally, and internationally. Our aim is to help in advancing understandings of human experience and cultural production as a supplement, and sometimes corrective, to traditional disciplines and methods.
The Center is distinguished from other humanities research institutes by the importance it attaches to work in the arts and social sciences for humanistic interdisciplinary collaboration, as well as by its emphasis on intellectual history and the exploration of the social context of ideas, artifacts, and events.
The Center accomplishes its charge through the programs it sponsors or co-funds:
- Residency Fellowships for U.C.R. faculty and graduate students
- Distinguished Visiting Faculty Fellowships
- Faculty and graduate student Focused Research Groups
- Conferences
- Lectures, Seminars, and Colloquia
- Performances, Readings, Screenings, and Exhibitions
- Curriculum and Pedagogy Initiatives
- The Distinguished Humanistic Achievement
The Center also administers grants. Past grants have included
- The Rockefeller Residency Site Program
- The Ford Foundation Education, Media, Arts, and Culture Grant
- The Hewlett Grant
- The Alpha Cluster Grant
The Center’s performance is reviewed every five years.
