2016-17 Humanities Interdisciplinary Program (HIP) Graduate Student Awards
CALL FOR PROPOSALS IS NOW CLOSED

Award Details

The Center for Ideas and Society invites proposals for the Humanities Interdisciplinary Project (HIP) Graduate Student awards.  Current UC Riverside graduate students in good-standing are eligible to apply. Project format and focus are open. Examples of projects HIP-Grad awards may support include, but are not limited to, seed funding for larger grant proposals, collaborations, workshops and symposia, including funds for speakers and non-UCR participants. We encourage projects that are multidisciplinary in orientation and cross humanities disciplinary boundaries by embracing the arts, social sciences, physical sciences, engineering, and other fields of study. All events funded by the Center are free and open to the public.

Award Amounts

The maximum award is $3,000. Proposers should indicate sources of any additional funds. Stipends, tuition, staffing, technological support and/or annual meetings of professional organizations and groups are not covered by this award.  No more than one-third of the award may be used for catering. Award must be expended within the 2016-17 academic year.  Final awards are contingent upon available funding.

Administrative and event support will be provided by the Center for Ideas and Society and, where possible, should make use of the Center’s facilities in College Building South.

The Humanities Graduate Student Research Grants assist graduate students involved in original research or creative projects in the humanities, as broadly defined by the National Endowment for the Humanities.  Awards will not exceed $2000.00. These awards are primarily intended for research proposals that related to dissertation or MFA work. Other proposals will be considered only if funds permit.

Proposals that involve personal interviews or experiments with human subjects must be review and approved by the Institutional Review Board first.  For forms and details, visit http://or.ucr.edu/ORI.aspx. Such proposals should indicate if approval has been granted and the protocol number.  Funds are released only after approval is obtained.

The grant period is May 1, 2016 through April 30, 2017.  Extensions of the grant period should be requested in writing.  Awards terminate upon leaves of absence, filing fee status, withdrawal or graduation. A student must be registered in the Spring Quarter to use these funds during the summer months.

Applications are due by February 15, 2016 and must be accompanied by a letter of support from a faculty sponsor with expertise in the area of the student’s project.
