CIS Funding Opportunities for Faculty

2016-17 Nature of Nature Proposals
CALL FOR PROPOSALS IS NOW CLOSED

Award Details

The Center for Ideas and Society invites proposals for lectures (by UCR faculty or others) in our series, “The Nature of Nature.” “The Nature of Nature” series focuses on the shifting, blurred and contested lines between what is natural and what is not. Given the historical effects of human activity does a non-human nature exist? What about the distinction between therapy and enhancement that bioethicists have been debating for some time now? Are medical interventions to avoid passing on genetic diseases, say, different from interventions to create so-called super babies? Does our concern about invasive species reflect as much – or more – concern about our national, cultural and political borders as it does about our environmental ones? What sort of line, if any, can we still draw between the natural and the artificial? Is even death unnatural now?

Awarded proposals receive modest funds for honoraria ($200-300), a venue, advertising and a reception. Co-sponsorships and collaborative projects are encouraged. All events funded by the Center are free and open to the public.

In a 1-2 page narrative, proposers should outline the guest speaker’s experience or expertise and the relevance or significance of the proposed topic or discussion.  Proposals should also indicate any potential collaboration across disciplines or co-sponsorships and a list of estimated expenses.

The deadline for submission of proposals is Monday, February 15, 2016.   All proposal documents should be combined in a single PDF and emailed to cis@ucr.edu, subject line “Nature proposal.”
